I tugged gently on the leadrope as I brought Heart out of the trailer. Thankfully, the trailer was one thing she was not afraid of. C'mon, girl, you're ok. He whickered and pulled her head around sharply, scenting the new air. His ears pricked as he saw lush green paddocks, and other horses. All her life she had been beat and punished for no reason, and finally she was allowed to be free, have fun and learn at her own pace. I knew that there would be a fair bit of work involved in helping her recuperate, but it would all be worth it when this darling was able to go in the stalls at night without a fuss, and not balk at the sight of men. I figured the best place to start was introducing her to a stall, so she could eventually be a happy horse in the dark enclosed place. But it was far too soon for that, so I was turning her out into the paddocks for her first week. It would be great for her to be with other horses, and it was so she could realise nothing would harm her while she was here. I opened the gate, and walked into the paddock, Heart in tow. I unclipped the lead and ensured her halter was securely done up, before letting go of her halter. She walked a few metres away and stopped, confused. It was as though she expected to be yelled at, or whipped at any minute. I watched her, and eventually, she cast her head down, taking a graze, with her ears still twitching at the slightest sound. I decided it was time to go and I jumped back in the car, heading back toward my new home.
